Service 06

E-commerce optimisation

Most webshops can earn more from the traffic they already have. That is almost always cheaper than buying more traffic. On top of that, growing shops tend to hit a wall on the processes behind the scenes that still run by hand.

Two problems that run into each other

At the front, conversion leaks in places you only see when you go looking: a checkout that stumbles on mobile, shipping costs that appear too late, search results that miss products sitting in stock.

At the back, manual work grows with revenue. Updating stock, pushing orders through, processing returns, importing supplier files. At some point growth cannot be carried without adding people, and that is where the margin goes.

What the service covers

Front and back together, because solving them separately returns less. More conversion on a process that is already creaking only makes it worse.

  • Conversion analysis

Where in the funnel people drop out, and on which device. That usually yields two or three changes that between them make most of the difference.

  • Personalisation and segmentation

Showing different customer groups different things. Not as a separate AI project but as practical configuration of what your platform can already do.

  • Stock and order automation

Integrations between shop, stock, accounting and carrier, so orders flow through untouched and stock levels are accurate.

  • Returns and customer contact

The part that costs the most time and gets automated the least. The fastest win is often here.

How it runs

  1. 01

    Two weeks of analysis

Putting the numbers from your analytics and your back office side by side, plus walking the buying route myself on mobile and desktop.

  2. 02

    Changes at the front

The two or three adjustments with the largest expected impact, measured before and after so you know whether they worked.

  3. 03

    Automation at the back

The manual processes standing in the way of growth, in order of how much time they cost.

What you end up with

Higher conversion on the same traffic, and a back office that can absorb a doubling of order volume without extra people.

  • Conversion improvement that is measured, not just plausible
  • Orders that run from purchase to shipment without handling
  • Stock levels that are accurate, so fewer sales lost to false stock-outs
  • Returns processed faster, which cuts customer contact

What it costs

What an engagement costs depends on its scope and on how many systems are involved. I work with a fixed price per phase rather than open-ended billing: you know what a phase costs before it starts, and you decide after each one whether to continue.

I only quote a figure once I know what we are talking about. That takes a half-hour conversation, at no charge.

Whether this fits

This works well when

  • you have enough traffic to measure conversion differences
  • order volume is growing but the back office runs by hand
  • your platform allows integrations, which all the major ones do
  • someone wants to keep watching the numbers afterwards

This fits less well when

  • you have too few visitors to measure anything reliably
  • the real problem sits in purchasing or in the margin
  • you are mid-platform-migration: wait for that to finish

Questions about e-commerce

How much traffic do I need?

For reliable conversion measurement you want roughly a thousand orders a month, or a few thousand sessions a week. Below that, differences cannot be told apart from chance and you are better off working on traffic or on the range first. Back-office automation already pays at lower volumes.

Do you work with a specific platform?

I have no fixed platform. The weight sits in the integrations and the processes, and those work on any platform with a decent API, whether that is Shopify, WooCommerce, Magento or something else. I rarely advise a migration: it usually costs more than it returns.

Do you also do ads or SEO?

No. I focus on what happens to the traffic you already have and on the processes behind it. For ads and SEO you are better off with a specialist agency, and it works better that way too: they bring the traffic, I make sure it does not leak away.
